What is a Kete ?A Kete is a traditional Maori basket which are generally formed from plaited New Zealand Flax. The flax construction made the baskets very strong and hard wearing. In some cases the weave was formed from differently dyed strands allowing decorative designs to be incorporated on the face of the Kete. Traditional kete's did not have handles as they were carried either or the shoulder or alternatively on the back. A variety of goods such as food and clothing were carried in ketes, but they were also used as containers for cooking food in hot thermal pools. Ketes are still used today, but have an increasing importance as a part of contemporary Maori Art, where they take contracting forms and shapes, & are constructed from a wide variety of materials possessing a many colours and texures.

Kete Room Overview.The Kete Room is the most substantial accommodation at Hobsonville House Bed and Breakfast. It is the largest B and B room, and has a King Bed along with a king single, allowing the room to sleep up to three persons comfortably. Anne and Greg have often travelled abroad with one of their three children, & have always had difficulty in obtaining a room for three. In discussions with fellow travellers, this appears to be a common problem, & it is with this in mind that the Kete Room has been furnished. |
||||
The Kete Room Beds.The beds consist of a King sized bed, and a King Single. It is envisaged that in most cases, the room would be suited to a couple or a family of three. However, the King Bed can be separated into two separate 'Long' Single beds allowing three single beds to be configured within the room. In this way the room can be used as a triple room. |
